UNDISCOVERED SHIPWRECKS
Estimates of the total number of shipwrecks on the bottom of the Great Lakes runs into the 10's of THOUSANDS. And, while many shipwrecks have been found (many by URA … well over 100) there still to this date remains large numbers of ships that have sunk and disappeared in the sand of time. They remain hidden on the lake bottoms awaiting to once again be exposed to the public and history. This is what makes looking for them so interesting and exciting. Finding them is not easy … time, money, and hard work is required for the overwhelming majority of finds. Only occasionally do we "trip" over them by accident to be once again found.
In the pages below you will find a few as yet "lost" ships. These would be "prize" discoveries for those who seek them. But, most of them have remained hidden for many, many decades and some well over a century. As you might imagine these will remain at the "top of the list" for URA as we continue our efforts to unmask their hiding locations. Once found, we may gain new insight as to their perils in past time and their ill fortune. How did they sink? What condition were they in when they finally settled on the bottom? And, if URA finds them they will be video documented to share with the public and for archaeological study.
