Enroute to Duluth MN with full cargo of cement freight the Russia found herself in building seas when the cargo swiftly shifted. The crew frantically began jettisoning deck cargo. Before they could dump enough to stabilize the ship the cargo shifted again and the Russia sank. She lies undiscovered somewhere near Detour MI in Lake Huron.
The Russia was built in 1872 and was some 231+ feet in length … large for her time.
