John DeBeck's 2020 Book on the Morrell
Most of the summer of 2019 & some of 2020 Undersea Research Associates (URA) dove both the bow and the stern of the Daniel J. Morrell in support of the Great Lakes Maritime Shipwreck Museum and for John DeBecks book on the Morrell. John's book is a hefty 12" x 12" 400+ page documentary of the Morrell's amazing story. He has done multiple interviews with surviving family members and former crew that served on the Morrell to capture all the detail of the Morrell's sinking.
URA supported the museum's and John's research with multiple scan's of the Daniel J. Morrell's broken bow and stern, performed marine archaeology on components such as the status of the hatch latches and penetrating deep into the stern's engine room to video the position of valves and gauges to try to better understand how she sank. Many hours were spent on the URA boat ... including many trips with John joining the URA team.
URA shot over a terabyte of high resolution HD video. We spent hours and hours combing through the diver's video to extract the best video "shorts" that helps the public to understand the story of the Morrell. Many of the photos in John's book are images extracted from the video, enhanced, cropped, and documented from this effort. John gracefully acknowledges the URA effort in the beginning of his book.
This is a MUST HAVE book for marine archaeologists & individuals interested in the history of shipwrecks of the Great Lakes! There is no other more complete and up to date documentation on the Morrell's final fate.
